the project

The molecular mechanisms which regulate oligodendrocyte differentiation – oligodendrocytes are the cells which create the myelin sheath – are an important research area for the understanding of MS. The disease inhibits the differentiation capacity of these cells’ immature precursors, thus limiting their remyelination capacity. The purpose of our project is to study the role of the Elongator molecule in the regulation of precursor differentiation in myelinating cells, as it may well control oligodendrocyte maturation via epigenetic modifications. We propose to verify this hypothesis by working with oligodendrocytes and their immature precursors without this molecule, and to check their myelinating and proliferative properties in vivo and in vitro.
